Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a Driving Licence?

Yes. Before lessons begin you must have applied for and be in receipt of a Provisional Driving Licence. You can apply for the licence either by post (application form D1 available from Post Offices), or on-line. A passport style photo is needed, and the fee is £50.00. Please see DVLA website for more details. Driving licence application forms are available from main Post Offices.

How old do I need to be to start driving lessons?

Once you are 17 or over, and have received your licence, you can begin to learn to drive. You can apply for a provisional licence up to 3 months before your 17th birthday. Please email or call if you have any more questions.

Is there a Driving Test Eyesight Requirement?

You must be able to read a car number plate from a distance of 20.5metres. If you need to wear glasses to read the number plate you will be expected to wear glasses for your driving test.

How soon can I start?

When you contact us, we can book you in straight away. You can normally start your lessons within a week or two.

Can I have 2 hourly lessons?

Yes, these are recommended, as you can achieve so much more experience in two hours. You can arrange it directly with your instructor.

What do I bring with me for my first driving lesson?

You will need to bring your driving licence too. You must have this before lessons can start. If you need glasses, you must wear them. You can wear your sunglasses too, for summertime or winter evenings when the sun is low. Comfortable shoes that are flexible will make your foot control easier.

Do I need to pass the theory test before I can start learning to drive?

No. It is a good idea to learn the theory whilst you are learning to drive, as it makes sense of the theory content, making it easier to understand and remember.

How many lessons will I need before I can take a test?

The Driving Standards Agency tells us candidates that have around 40 hours of professional training and top that up with plenty of extra practice, have the best chance of passing their test. You may not need this much, or you may need a little more, it’s all down to the individual.

Can my relatives teach me how to drive?

An Approved Driving Instructor is recommended by the Driver Standards Agency, however private practice in addition to formal lessons can help you to build on and practice what you have learnt. If your relative teaches you they must be over 21 years of age and have held a Full British Driving Licence for at least 3 years, but professionally trained driving instructors will always teach you correctly.

How will I know when I’m ready for test?

To confirm your strengths and weaknesses, your instructor will recommend a mock test if they feel you are ready. This is a good indicator of your strengths and weaknesses and what areas need to be worked on further. You should also feel secure with your abilities.
